Digital evidence authentication faces a growing crisis as metadata, once a key indicator, proves increasingly unreliable.
While metadata provides information like creation date and location, it's easily altered on phones or with free tools. Innocent actions like file transfers or saving from email can inadvertently change it, and social media platforms routinely strip embedded data.
Screenshots, being new files, contain no original metadata. This vulnerability is exacerbated by deepfakes, which can be paired with fabricated metadata. Relying solely on metadata is a mistake, as it can be manipulated to make false evidence appear legitimate.
True authentication now requires device-level digital forensics, examining system databases and logs on the originating device for interlocking traces that are difficult to fake.
Metadata remains a useful lead, but it's no longer sufficient proof, especially with the rise of sophisticated digital manipulation.
